Markdown to PDF

Type or upload Markdown and get a PDF of real text: headings, lists, tables, coloured code and links you can click, in a light, dark or GitHub-style theme.

About This Tool

Markdown to PDF turns Markdown that you type or upload into a PDF. Its pages hold text, not pictures of text: it can be selected and searched, its links can be clicked, and the file is small. Pages break between lines, and a document may be as long as you like.

The PDF is made from the same reading of your Markdown as the preview: headings, bold and italic, links, numbered and bulleted lists and lists inside lists, block quotes, code blocks with coloured code and, with the GitHub box ticked, tables, task lists and struck-through text. Choose a light, dark or GitHub-style theme and A4, Letter or Legal pages; the margins are fixed. Text in Arabic or Hebrew is set from the right, block by block. Pictures written into the Markdown itself as data: addresses are shown; pictures on the web are not fetched, and their places stay empty. The preview is drawn by your browser and the PDF by a layout engine, so spacing and fonts differ a little between the two. That engine, about 28 MB, is downloaded once, when you first open the tool.

All conversion happens locally in your browser, ensuring your content remains private.

How to Use

  1. Write or Upload Markdown

Type or paste Markdown under "Write Markdown", or click "Upload File" and choose a .md, .markdown or .txt file. An uploaded file opens in the editor, and what is converted is what the editor shows.

  2. Choose Theme

Under "Theme" pick "Light", "Dark" or "GitHub", and under "Page Size" pick A4, Letter or Legal. The margins are fixed.

  3. Convert and Download

Click "Convert to PDF", then download the file. Change the text or a setting and the button is there to convert again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GitHub Flavored Markdown supported?

Yes. With "GitHub Flavored Markdown (tables, task lists, struck-through text)" ticked, tables, task lists and struck-through text are converted, in the PDF as in the preview.

Can I customize the styling?

By choosing one of the three themes, "Light", "Dark" or "GitHub", and the page size. There is no box for your own CSS, and the margins and fonts cannot be changed.

Are code blocks highlighted?

Yes, when "Colour the code in code blocks" is ticked: the words of a code block are coloured by what they are, in the language the block names or the one it appears to be in. The code itself is printed exactly as typed.
