PDF to CBZ
Draw each page of a PDF as a JPG, PNG or WebP picture (72 to 180 DPI) and pack the pictures into a .cbz comic archive with ComicInfo.xml details.
About This Tool
PDF to CBZ draws every page of a PDF as a picture and packs the pictures, named page_001, page_002 and so on, into a Comic Book ZIP (.cbz) file. The pictures are JPG, PNG or WebP at 72 to 180 DPI (the "Resolution" slider), which suits reading on a screen but is lower than a 300 DPI scan.
The details you type (title, series, issue and volume numbers, writer, publisher, genre and reading direction) are written into three places: a ComicInfo.xml file, which comic library programs read, a metadata.opf file, and a ComicBookInfo note in the ZIP comment. Only what you type is written: a box left empty is left out. Whether a given program uses the details is up to that program. The reading direction is recorded as a note for the reader app; the pages themselves are not reordered.
Turn on "Greyscale" to save the pages in shades of grey, as an e-ink screen shows them. The picture on the screen is the first page of your PDF, which comic readers show as the cover; it turns grey with the switch. Everything happens in your browser.
How to Use
Upload Comic PDF
Drag and drop your primary comic, artbook, or manga PDF file.
Input Comic Metadata
Fill in what you know of the book (only the title is filled in for you, from the file's name), choose the reading direction, and set the picture format, resolution and quality.
Convert and Download
Click "Convert to CBZ" ("Cancel" stops it), then download the .cbz file.
Use Cases
Retrograde Comic Packaging
Turn a scanned comic or book PDF into a CBZ for a comic reader or a library program. Pages are redrawn at 180 DPI at most, so a sharper scan loses some detail.
Details Inside the File
The title, series, issue and writer you type travel inside the archive as ComicInfo.xml, so a library program that reads that file can sort the book without asking you again.
Lighter Files for a Device
Lower the picture quality or the resolution to make a lighter file for a device with little storage, and turn on "Greyscale" for an e-ink reader.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a .cbz file?
A CBZ file is a specialized archive container format for comic book series. It is internally formatted as a ZIP package containing sequentially numbered page images alongside structural metadata XML files.
How is metadata compatible?
The archive carries the same details in three forms: ComicInfo.xml, the format many comic library programs read, metadata.opf, and a ComicBookInfo note in the ZIP comment. Whether a program reads them is up to that program. Nothing is filled in for you beyond the title, which starts as the file's name: a box left empty is not written at all.
Why use Grayscale mode?
An e-ink screen shows greys only, so colour is of no use on it. With "Greyscale" on, every page is saved in shades of grey; the picture of the cover on the screen shows the effect before you convert.
