PDF to Word

Convert a PDF to a Word (DOCX) file with editable text. Pictures, links and ruled tables are kept; the layout is rebuilt and needs checking. Runs in your browser.

About This Tool

PDF to Word turns a PDF into a Word (DOCX) file whose text you can edit. Text keeps its font name, size, colour, bold and italic; pictures, web links and tables drawn with lines are carried over.

The layout is rebuilt from where things sit on the page, so the result is close to the original, not identical: expect to tidy spacing and line breaks. Drawings and charts with slanted or curved lines become pictures at screen resolution, a table without ruled lines becomes plain lines of text, and a scanned page arrives as a picture of the page.

The conversion runs in your browser and the file is not uploaded. The first run also loads the converter itself, which is large, so it takes longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is formatting preserved?

Mostly, not exactly: spacing and line breaks need tidying. Fonts are named, not put in the file, so Word replaces any that your computer lacks. The converter is made for text that runs left to right: Arabic words come through, but paragraphs are not set right-to-left, and a line that mixes Arabic with numbers or Latin words can come out in the wrong order.

Can I convert scanned PDFs?

They convert, but not into text. A scanned page holds a picture, so it arrives in Word as a picture of the page. Running OCR PDF first does not change that here: OCR adds invisible text, and this converter leaves invisible text out. To get the words of a scan, use OCR PDF with "Extract Plain Text File (.txt)" as the output.

Is it compatible with Word?

Yes, the output is a standard .docx file compatible with Microsoft Word and Google Docs.
