Enhance Handwriting Ink

Whitens the paper in a PNG or JPG photo of handwriting and darkens or strengthens the ink, using a brightness level and a contrast setting you choose.

About This Tool

Enhance Handwriting Ink works on one picture, a PNG or JPG, and returns a picture; it does not open PDF files. Pixels brighter than the level you set are turned pure white, which clears light paper, and the remaining pixels are then adjusted according to "Ink strength".

"What to do with the ink" offers three ways to adjust what remains. "More contrast" stretches contrast, so darker pixels get darker and lighter ones lighter. "Darker ink" darkens every remaining pixel. "Stronger red stamp" strengthens strongly red pixels and leaves the rest as it is. None of them separates ink from other dark marks, and none adapts to uneven lighting: one brightness level applies to the whole picture, so a shadow darker than that level stays.

The preview shows the result as you move the settings. The background becomes white, not transparent, and the result is saved as a PNG whatever you uploaded. Everything happens in your browser; the picture does not leave your device.

How to Use

  1. Upload the Picture

Choose one PNG or JPG, such as a photo or scan of a handwritten page. To work on a page of a PDF, turn it into a picture first, for example with the PDF to PNG tool.

  2. Choose the Settings

Pick an option under "What to do with the ink". Lower "Whiten paper brighter than" to whiten more of the paper, or raise it to keep pale strokes. "Ink strength" sets how strongly the remaining pixels are changed; at 1.0 they are not changed at all. Watch the preview as you change them.

  3. Run and Download

Click "Clean the page", then "Download". The download is your picture at its full size; the preview is a smaller copy of the same result. To try other settings, change them and run it again.

Use Cases

Signed Pages on Grey or Yellowed Paper

A photo of a signed page can come out with white paper and darker ink, which makes it easier to read and to print.

Handwritten Notes and Notebooks

Photos of notes taken in pen become cleaner: light paper turns white and the writing is darkened.

Old Ledgers and Letters

Faded dark ink on aged paper can be made stronger, as long as the ink is clearly darker than the paper.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upload a PDF, and what do I get back?

Only PNG and JPG pictures are accepted, one at a time, and the result is a picture, not a PDF. It is always saved as a PNG, also when you uploaded a JPG. The picture keeps its size, and the background is white rather than transparent.

Does it correct uneven lighting or shadows?

No. It applies one brightness level to the whole picture and a simple contrast formula, and it does not analyse regions separately. A shadow darker than the level you set is kept, and "Darker ink" makes it darker still. Lowering the level whitens more of the shadow but can also erase pale strokes.

Does the red stamp option remove everything except the stamp?

No. It only strengthens pixels that are strongly red and whitens the light paper. Dark handwriting and anything else below the brightness level stays exactly as it was, and a faded, pinkish stamp may not count as red at all. No option isolates one kind of ink.
