Encrypt PDF

Password protect PDF files. Add encryption and set permissions.

About This Tool

Encrypt PDF locks a PDF with a password. A user password must be typed before the file opens. An owner password stands behind the limits you set under "Document Permissions", such as no printing or no copying.

The file is always encrypted with 256-bit AES; there is no other level to choose. The permission boxes take effect only when the owner password is filled in and differs from the user password. Those limits are a request that PDF readers follow, not a lock: anyone who can open the file can take them off, for example with Remove Restrictions on this site. Only the user password keeps the contents from being read.

All encryption happens in your browser, ensuring your passwords and documents remain private.

How to Use

  1. Upload Your PDF

Drag and drop your PDF file or click to select.

  2. Set Passwords

Type a user password, an owner password, or both. To limit printing, copying or editing, type an owner password that differs from the user password and untick the boxes under "Document Permissions".

  3. Encrypt and Download

Click "Encrypt PDF", then download the result. If you change a password or a box afterwards, click "Encrypt PDF" again before you download.

Use Cases

Confidential Documents

Protect sensitive business documents.

Personal Files

Secure personal documents like tax returns.

Controlled Distribution

Ask readers not to print, copy or change a document. Most PDF readers comply, but anyone who can open the file can remove the limits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between user and owner passwords?

The user password is asked for when the file is opened. The owner password is what a PDF program asks for before it lifts the limits set under "Document Permissions". Type only a user password and it serves as both. Type only an owner password and the file opens for anyone, without a password.

What encryption is used?

256-bit AES, always. There is no 128-bit option.

Can I set permissions without a user password?

Yes. Type only an owner password and untick what should not be allowed. The file then opens for anyone, and the limits can be removed again without the password, so do not rely on them to keep text from being copied.
