View Metadata

See what a PDF says about itself: title, author, dates with their time zone, the program that made it, and its XMP metadata.

About This Tool

View Metadata shows the properties stored in a PDF: title, author, subject, keywords, the program that created it, the creation and modification dates, the page count, the file size and the PDF version, and whether it has a form or a signature. Properties that a program added under names of its own are listed too, and so is the XMP packet, where most programs now keep a document's metadata.

The values are read as soon as you add the file, and you can save them as a JSON file. A date is shown as the file writes it, on the clock it was written by, with how far that clock is from UTC. All of it is what the file says about itself: anyone can change it, so it does not prove who wrote a document or when.

All viewing happens in your browser, ensuring your documents remain private.

How to Use

  1. Upload Your PDF

Drag and drop your PDF file or click to select.

  2. View Properties

The properties appear as soon as the file is read, under "Document Properties", "Dates" and "Document Information", with "Other Properties" and "XMP Metadata" where the file has any.

  3. Export if Needed

Click "Export as JSON" to save everything shown as a JSON file.

Frequently Asked Questions

What metadata is shown?

Title, author, subject, keywords, creator application, PDF producer, language, creation and modification dates, page count, file size, PDF version, and whether the file is linearized, has a form or has a signature. A time is shown as it stands in the file, followed by its zone, such as (UTC+03:00), or by "no time zone given".

Can I edit metadata here?

Use the Edit Metadata tool to modify document properties.

Is XMP metadata included?

Yes. Every property of the XMP packet is listed under "XMP Metadata" by the name it has there, such as dc:title or xmp:createdate, and entries that a program added to the document information under names of its own are listed under "Other Properties".
