Fix Dead Links
Lists the web links stored in a PDF with their page numbers and lets you replace where each one points. It does not test whether a link still works.
About This Tool
Fix Dead Links lists the web links in a PDF and lets you change where they point. When you add a file, each address it links to is shown with the pages it is on and a box for a new address. Type the replacement, save, and the copy you download carries the new address.
The tool does not check whether a link works. No address is opened or tested, so a link that is listed is only a link that exists in the file. To find out which addresses are dead, open them yourself in a browser.
A link keeps its place on the page and the text or picture you click; what is replaced is its destination, the /URI entry. Links that jump to another page of the same document are not listed, and neither are addresses that are merely printed as text. The tool works on one PDF at a time. Everything happens in your browser; the file does not leave your device.
How to Use
Upload the PDF
Choose the one PDF whose links you want to review.
Type the New Addresses
The links are listed as soon as the file is read. Under each address you want to change, type the new one in "New address". An address typed without https:// gets it added, and an email address becomes an email link. Links that share an address are changed together.
Save, Then Download
Click "Save the new addresses", then "Download". The addresses that were changed are marked "Changed". If you type in a box again, save once more before you download.
Use Cases
Correcting a Wrong Address
Point a link at the right page without going back to the program the PDF was made in.
Reviewing the Links in a Document
See the web addresses a PDF links to, page by page, and open the ones you doubt in your browser to check them yourself.
A Site That Moved to a New Domain
Type the new address once for each old one: every link to that address, on whatever page, is changed together.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it check whether a link still works?
No. The tool never contacts the addresses, so it cannot tell a working link from a broken one. Test the addresses yourself, then use the tool to replace the ones that need changing.
Which links does it list?
Web and email links that are stored on the pages as link annotations. Links that jump within the document are not listed, nor are addresses that appear only as text. When a file has none, the page says so.
I typed a new address. How do I know it was written?
Typing alone changes nothing in the file: click "Save the new addresses". The page then says how many links point to their new addresses and marks each changed address "Changed"; the list goes on showing the old address above each box, because that is what your original file holds. The new address is not tested, so look for typing mistakes. An empty box leaves the link as it is: the tool cannot remove a link, and it does not change the text shown on the page.
